The Chequers is hidden amongst the trees on the edge of Thompson Village. We believe it takes its name from the method used in earlier times of counting money on a chequered cloth for ease of counting. The inn was built in the 16th Century and still holds some original features such as exposed beams, timber & a thatched swooping almost to the ground. Manor counts were held here certainly from 1724 if not before. They dealt with rents lettings of land, property of the manor & small crimes. Nowaday The Chequers boasts various culinary recognitions & this has made it a popular venue & resting place for both locals & visitors alike
